HOW WAS THIS SOUTHWESTERN HOME DECOR CREATED?

Here's the story of where the inspiration came from for this Southwestern Wall Art Canvas, as told by the award-winning artist Farley Lewis:

Learn more about Farley Lewis at www.FarleyLewis.com

"Ghost Ranch near Abiquiu, New Mexico, is an art mecca.

Some 50 miles north of Santa Fe, I was there for a plein air painting event.

Further, I was competing with artists across the country.

The scenes of this high desert region were both stark and stunning, leaving us feeling small.

The rock bluffs towered hundreds of feet into the air.

Moreover, they were daring us to try to paint them with any degree of accuracy.

So I did what any self-respecting artist would do – I tried to paint them.

This particular rock monolith was catching the last rays of the evening sun, lighting up the already- brilliant colors to a nuclear level. Set against the dark blue sky, the result was electrifying.

I love a good contrast, and boy, I found it here.

The challenge I faced as I painted was to subdue all of the foregrounds.

Additionally, I had to keep it dark enough to make the distant mountain shine as I saw it.

Amazed at how dark I had to paint those yellow foreground grasses to get them to read correctly within the whole painting.

This place – and the painting that came from my time there – was something of a spiritual experience.

Perhaps every painting has a degree of this infused, but this one created a sense of awe and wonder in me.

As a result, I captured more than the scene.

Furthermore, I caught the emotion it evoked, the thrill of standing in a grand and majestic place full of history, desert creatures, long-forgotten travelers, and art.

HOW IS GHOST RANCH, NEW MEXICO, CONNECTED TO SOUTHWESTERN ART?

Ghost Ranch, New Mexico, is a place that holds a special place in the hearts of many artists and art lovers.

This sprawling ranch is nestled among the stunning red rocks of the Southwest.

Its rugged beauty has inspired countless works of art.

From Southwestern paintings to sculptures, Ghost Ranch has been the muse of some of the most celebrated artists in the world.

But what about this place makes it unique, and how has it become so connected to the art of the Southwest?

THE HISTORY OF GHOST RANCH AND ITS CONNECTION TO THE SOUTHWESTERN STYLE

Understanding the connection between Ghost Ranch and Southwestern art is essential to understand the region's history.

The area now known as Ghost Ranch was initially inhabited by the Pueblo people.

They lived in the Southwest for over a thousand years.

They were followed by the Spanish, who colonized the area in the 16th century.

The Spanish settlers brought their own artistic traditions, including bright colors and intricate patterns, into their art and architecture.

In the 1800s, the land that is now Ghost Ranch was owned by the Archuleta family, who used it for grazing cattle and sheep.

In the early 1900s, the property was purchased by Arthur and Phoebe Pack, who were drawn to the area's rugged beauty.

The Packs were both artists, and they immediately saw the potential of the land as a place of inspiration and creativity.

Over the years, the Packs developed Ghost Ranch into a thriving arts community.

They built a guesthouse, a popular gathering place for artists and writers, and hosted art classes and workshops on the property.

Some of the most famous artists of the 20th century came to Ghost Ranch to work, including Georgia O'Keeffe, who is the most closely associated with the ranch and its artistic legacy.

THE ARTISTIC LEGACY OF GHOST RANCH

Ghost Ranch has inspired countless works of art, and its rugged beauty has been the subject of some of the most iconic Southwest paintings and sculptures.

The most famous artist associated with Ghost Ranch is Georgia O'Keeffe, who first visited the property in 1934.

The beauty of the landscape immediately took O'Keeffe, and she spent many years working and living at Ghost Ranch.

O'Keeffe's Southwest paintings of Ghost Ranch are some of her most famous works.

She was inspired by the shapes and colors of the landscape, and she often painted close-up views of rocks and other natural formations.

Her Southwestern paintings capture the essence of the Southwest, with its bold colors and dramatic landscapes.

Other artists inspired by Ghost Ranch include Ansel Adams, who photographed the property in the 1940s, and Judy Chicago, who created a massive installation called "The Dinner Party" at the ranch in the 1970s.

The installation, which features a triangular table with place settings for 39 historical and mythical women, is now housed at the Brooklyn Museum in New York City.

Today, Ghost Ranch continues to be a thriving arts community, with artists and writers from all over the world coming to work and being inspired by the landscape's rugged beauty.

The ranch offers a variety of classes and workshops, including painting, sculpture, writing, and photography, and it remains a beloved destination for anyone interested in the art and culture of the Southwest.

SUMMARY OF THE CONNECTION BETWEEN GHOST RANCH AND THE SOUTHWESTERN ART STYLE

So, what about Ghost Ranch makes it so connected to the art of the Southwest?

At its heart, the landscape's rugged beauty has drawn artists to this region for centuries.
